Nathan

By Training for the Future

Client Story: Nathan

Arrival

Nathan accepted Islam two-years ago and after having difficulties at home, found himself homeless and sleeping his car for 3-weeks. Nathan went to the Valley Ranch Islamic Center (VRIC) and through Ma’ruf Dallas’ partnership with VRIC, was referred to us. Nathan met his case manager weekly and informed them that he was let-go from his job as an Assistant Club Manager for a fitness club because he was now homeless. His faith in Allah was strong, but his outlook on his situation was becoming dim.

Assistance

Working through his Case Manager, Ma’ruf Dallas immediately got Nathan a hotel room with kitchen so he could have a roof over his head and food to nourish him, while the search for an apartment began. Once we found him an apartment, Ma’ruf Dallas provided rental assistance, as well as weekly groceries from our Food Pantry. Nathan also received a Home Welcome Package to make his move into his new apartment more complete. Nathan’s Case Manager saw great potential in him and enrolled him in the Medical Assistant program as part of Training for the Future.

Achievements

Nathan graduated from the Medical Assistant program and immediately got a job at Parkland Hospital in the Cardiology department. He has been excelling and enjoying his new career, but more importantly, he expressed a desire to give back. As a result, Nathan has been mentoring other clients in the Training for the Future program and also assisting them with resume building.

Dankaz Family

Client Story: Dankaz Family

Arrival

The Dankaz family came to the US in September 2022 after fleeing from Syria. The family of five, including the father who has a physical disability, came to Ma’ruf because they did not have any food in their apartment.

Assistance

The family met with their Case Manager who immediately enrolled them in the weekly grocery program through our Food Pantry. They were also provided a Home Welcome Package so they would have all the necessary items to make their new home more complete. The three children, who are extremely smart, were enrolled in Ma’ruf Dallas weekend Youth Program, so they could get help with school work and improve on their English skills.

Achievements

The family has settled much better, and they’ve been meeting with their Case Manager at Ma’ruf Dallas regularly. The older son and daughter took the Driving Course we offer and received their learner’s permit. They have also received their work permits, and their mother has now gotten a job. The father’s disability application was also submitted and this family now has hope for the future.

Mohammed

Client Story: Mohammed

Arrival

Mohammed and his family of eight, consisting of 3 generations, escaped the devastation in Syria as refugees and initially resettled in North Carolina when they arrived in the US. Shortly after, they decided to move to Dallas as they heard of the large Syrian community here. Mohammed’s family here includes his elderly parents, wife and his five beautiful children.

Assistance

After arriving in Dallas, Mohammed worked as an Uber driver, and came to Ma’ruf Dallas to seek guidance on how to better support his family. He received assistance through our Food Pantry and a referral to a construction company that was hiring. One day, while working on the roof of a home, he fell, breaking his back and ribs. Ma’ruf Dallas was there to support Mohammed and his family throughout his recovery from his devastating injury by providing rental assistance, utility bill assistance, food assistance and helping them apply for food stamps and Medicaid.

Achievements

After Mohammed’s recovery, his Case Manager recommended he enroll in our inaugural class for the Training for the Future program. Mohammed was a stellar student, receiving praise from all his instructions, and graduated as a Licensed Electrician in February 2022. Now, he has been working for QDFW Solar, installing solar systems throughout the area!

Irum

Client Story: Irum

Arrival

Irum came from a tumultuous home situation which caused her separation from her spouse. She came to American in 2018 from Pakistan with her two children; a son, who has a disability, and her daughter. After arrival, she lived with her sister, who is a widow, but their circumstance was grim and she was losing hope

Assistance

Irum found Ma’ruf Dallas and felt a spark of home after meeting with her Case Manager. As part of her success plan she received rental assistance and was able to find a full-time childcare job. Ma’ruf Dallas also enrolled her in our driving education class and Car Program. She was also enrolled in the Training for the Future program.

Achievements

Irum graduated as a Medical Assistant in October 2022 and was able to get a job at a Medical Clinic soon after. Now she’s working full-time, enjoying her new career and able to see the light at the end of this difficult journey.

Muzdha

Client Story: Muzdha

Arrival

Muzdha escaped from Afghanistan on her own, under extremely difficult circumstances. During the mass evacuation from Afghanistan at the end of 2021, Muzdha and her family planned on evacuating together. However, a bomb blast near the airport separated them and although Muzdha was able to get onto a plane, her husband, children and parents got left behind.

Assistance

Muzdha met with her case manager every week to establish her resettlement plan. During this time, Ma’ruf Dallas helped her get her own apartment and provided rental assistance until she was able to find a job. We helped her apply for food stamps, and until the food stamps got approved, she received weekly groceries from our food pantry. Finally, she received a Home Welcome Package from Ma’ruf Dallas, which allowed her to better settle into her new home.

Muzdha also benefited from our Driving Program so she could learn to drive and get her driver’s license.

Achievements

Muzdha successfully found a job in the retail sector and got her driver’s license. She also received a car through our Car Program, which allows her with the transportation security she needs to be able to continue to grow. Finally, Muzdha was connected with a lawyer to assist with her asylum case, which has been applied for and pending.
